After one of the most thrilling high school girls basketball seasons we have seen in years, the road has finally halted at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. On Saturday, February 26th, eight teams crowded with stars across their rosters will compete in four decisive matchups to be crowned state champs! The first matchup of the day consists of the Class A State Championship between Tecumseh v. Lafayette Central Catholic.
Tecumseh (20-8) vs. Lafayette Central Catholic (24-4) | 10:30 AM EST
Tecumseh travels to Gainbridge Fieldhouse as heavy underdogs against Lafayette Central Catholic. Tecumseh fought their way through multiple close matchups in the postseason against Northeast Dubois and Lanesville as well as a crucial semi-state victory over No. 1 ranked Waldron. They come into their first-ever state championship game with the least exceptional record, but the momentum they have accumulated through the playoffs is incomparable.
Kaybree Oxley leads the way for the Braves with the most points on the team at 493. Standing at 5’10”, Oxley leads the team in rebounds with 259. She has plenty of experience playing varsity all four years. Oxley told us, “This opportunity means everything to us to be able to be the first-ever girl’s basketball team from Tecumseh to make it past regionals, but going to state is way different and it is super exciting!” Sophomores, Jenna Danahoo and Karsyn Flowers have both played crucial roles for the Braves as well in the postseason.
Lafayette Central Catholic has had a near-perfect season disregarding two losses to Benton Central, Evansville Memorial, and Harrison. The Knights have made their playoff run look straightforward with secure wins over all their opponents. Now, as front runners for the 1A state title, Central Catholic looks to be right at the cusp of a state championship.
Stars fill the Central Catholic roster in all aspects. Junior Tori Thompson, Senior Karsyn Cherry, and Kendal Rider make up just a short portion of this immense lineup.
